Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions, and not just about berries! Here are answers to some of the more common questions, but if you want to know anything else, please contact us.
What do you do when the shop is closed?
We holiday in February, then spend time at school, camping, running, biking etc. Work on the farm starts again in May when we start planting strawberries. In July we hang the bramble canes and before we know it, the season is on again!
What is a bramble?
Brambles are thorny plants of the genus Rubus, in the rose family. Bramble fruit is the fruit of any such plant, including the blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry.
What is a Ranui Berry?
The Ranui Berry is a hybrid berry achieved by crossing Auroraberry and Marionberry in the New Zealand breeding programme. The result is a sweet and juicy blackberry - one of our favourites.
How much do you spray?
We only spray when necessary. When we do pest and disease monitoring, we use phermore traps (they are the small yellow containers around the farm) to trap pests. We adhere to NZ Gap and GROWSAFE certifications.
Do you take orders for Christmas?
We do our utmost to have most berries available over this period, however demand is high on the 23rd and 24th. We recommend you get in early, pick your own a few days before, and keep them refrigerated.
How much does it cost to Pick Your Own?
That all depends on what you want to pick and what size container you want. Check out our Pick Your Own page for full details and prices.
How do I apply for a job?
We employ berry pickers, fruit packers, and shop staff over the berry season (October - February).
To apply for seasonal work, please email a brief CV and cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org and include:
- the phone numbers of two referees (from recent positions)
- whether you are a student (secondary or tertiary)
- your availability eg. full time, weekends only, holidays only
Whakatane berry picking and packing jobs usually start from late October/November and continue through until mid January.
Shop and Café jobs are advertised in September and the shop opens from mid-October to early February.
All applicants must be available to work weekends and public holidays.
